Corns and Calluses Treatment

It is best not to cut corns yourself, especially if you are elderly or diabetic. We will be able to reduce the bulk of the corn and apply astringents to cut down on sweat retention between the toes.

Be careful about using corn plasters, as they contain acids that can burn the healthy skin around the corn and this can lead to serious problems such as infection. Always consult us for advice before using corn plasters. Home remedies, are potentially dangerous. Commercially available ‘cures’ should be used only following professional advice.

Verruca Treatments

It is best to make an appointment as soon as you are aware that you or your child has a verruca. We will be able to advice you on the best treatment going forward even if it is to purchase an over the counter preparation rather than use our treatments. Many people wait years before they attend or use other recommended treatments first before coming to see us and as a result may spread their verruca on their own foot or to other members of their family.

Each patient is assessed for their treatment needs depending on their age, duration of symptoms, lifestyle and tolerance of treatment and medical risk.

Topical Treatments

Debridement of the area, combined with Salicylic Acid applied directly onto the verruca, which helps to reduce the bulk of large, or multiple verrucae – useful for children as least painful treatment, may require several treatments.

Cryotherapy

Freezing of verrucae is as effective as topical treatments but is useful for smaller areas or where padding stuck to the skin cannot be tolerated – may require several treatments.

Needling

Needling for verruca is a simple treatment that has proved effective for over 40 years, but is now having a renaissance as recent studies have showed a 68% success rate. The needling procedure is usually painless and is carried out under a local anaesthetic. When the patient is happy the area is sufficiently pain-free a needle is applied repeatedly to the verruca. The process implants the virally infected cells deeper into the underlying tissue and an immune response is triggered.

Unlike treatments using acids, needling usually only requires a single application, but in some cases further treatment is necessary.
